  • The Mill’s History

Lying approx 15 meters above, and at the back of the back of the house, is the Mill Pond, measuring 70x40x2 meters, this water was sluiced down streams and gantries, to fall on to the Mill Wheel, in itself, 2 ton in weight, and nearly 4 meters high, it was originally used for grinding cereals.

Later the Mill Wheel, was adapted to saw, and work timber. Lumber was transported by horse and cart, up the road at the back of the house, to the Sawmill, after being sawn to varying lengths and widths, the timber was handed down, to the Joiner Shop, where it was stored untill seasoned. The Joiner Shop was used by the Estate, and employed 4 carpenters and apprentices. Two of these carpenters, with there families, lived in the Watermill, one family upstairs, and one downstairs.
